Overview
Obesity is a medical condition characterized by excessive body fat that can negatively impact health. It’s typically measured using body mass index (BMI), with a BMI of 30 or higher considered obese. Obesity increases the risk of numerous health problems, including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke, and certain cancers. It often results from a combination of factors, such as poor diet, lack of physical activity, genetics, and hormonal influences. Effective treatment typically involves lifestyle changes like improved diet, increased physical activity, and, in some cases, medications or surgery.
