Overview
Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a medical condition where the force of the blood against the artery walls is consistently too high. It is often referred to as a “silent killer” because it can exist without noticeable symptoms, yet it significantly increases the risk of serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney failure. Normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mm Hg, while elevated blood pressure is between 120-129/80 mm Hg. Hypertension Stage 1 is defined as blood pressure ranging from 130-139/80-89 mm Hg, and Hypertension Stage 2 is 140/90 mm Hg or higher. Several factors contribute to the development of hypertension, including genetics, age, and lifestyle choices. A family history of hypertension increases the risk, as does aging. Lifestyle factors such as a poor diet, physical inactivity, and excessive alcohol consumption also play significant roles in its development.
